MR. BERTRAM ALSTrN and Mr. W. Francis Lloyd, the joint authors of. The Secret of High Wages, which is reviewed in a leading article this week, have much in .conunon.." They were. born on the same day, • April 80th, 1896 ; they served in the same . regiment during the War—the Royal Artillery—with the same substantive rank ; were at the-same University, at the same time ; and eventually joined the same firm, and worked in the same building. All this time they-never met. On Mr. Lloyd's return from India, where he had been representing his firm for some time, the two met and had long discussions on the causes of the industrial depression. 'As a result they went to Canada and the United States to check their own views and to see whether it was by the operation of certain principles that the newer countries were advancing.
