English - Latin Gradus. By A. C. Ainger and H. G. Wintle.

(John Murray.)—We are glad to believe that the practice of writing Latin verse flourishes sufficiently to justify the publication of this book. It certainly should be helped and furthered by it. It is an English-Latin dictionary specially adapted for purposes of versification. One instance will give an idea of what the book gives. Under " to freeze," we have (1) congelo, concresco, induresco, rigesco, gelor, glacio, given as equivalents for the neuter verb, the student being cautioned that for gelor there is no bettor authority than Martial. For the active verb, con gob, duro, induro, gelo, and glad(' are given, gel° being similarly noted. Finally, for the metaphorical use of the word, there is a reference to "curdle."
