SIR,-1 sympathise with much that Mr. Cobban wrote in your issue of January 21, but the future of the direct-grant schools is linked with that of the maintained grammar schools. A country can stomach an anomaly whereby there is super-selection in the direct-grant school and merely selection in the neighbouring maintained grammar school, but it cannot stomach the inevitable super-super selection for the direct-grant school side by side with no selection in a state comprehensive school. Surely we cannot with our eyes open make an anomalous position more anomalous?
