SIR,—News of the Week for March 21st opines that the
Government may be in the fourth form in the school for economic planning, but the Opposition remains in the third. Having regard to the melancholy history of the past few months your judgement must be based on facts unknown to the general public ; no other conclusion is possible. On the known facts it seems inconceivable that any Government with such a record of abysmal failure in nearly every facet of its activities could be placed in any form except the lowest. The only tonic these master physicians have been able to give a wearied nation is one crisis after another, the only pill a series of savage repressions, the only light relief the flatulent murmurs round Dr. Dalton's heart. The proper place for these quack physicians, these master planners, is not, I suggest, the fourth or even the third forms, but the infants' school, there to learn the
alphabet of their job.—Your faithfully, W. H. DAVIS. Holly Mount, Brading, I.W.
