" THE GUARDIAN " AND MR. CHURCHILL Sig,—As an old

Manchester man and a respecter of the tradition of the famous Manchester Guardian, I am amazed, as is Janus, at the recent almost vicious and unfair attack on Mr. Churchill. Such a vitriolic attack occurred at the last election—commented on at the time by Janus. Now it is repeated. Are they, I wonder, the reflection of a personal psychological bias of a particular writer or the considered attitude of a once-great paper? How C. P. Scott—with whom comment was always fair as well as free—would have hated it!—Yours faithfully, Marden House, East Harting, Petersfield. J. Hussy HAYES.
