more precious than ever—and scarcer, and till it appears sowing is severely handicapped. While such humble flowers as the aconites showed extra large and cheerful flowers through the melting snow, the shrubs began to confess their wounds. Even the too popular Lonivera nitida was heavily cut, and some of the barberries look almost as sad as the evergreen Ceanothus. On the other hand flowers of the Cydonia Japonica have anticipated the crocuses.
