An East London Mystery. By Adeline Sergeant. 3 vols. (Hurst
and Blackett.)—Miss Sargeaut begins her first volume with what she calls a "prelude." A murder is committed in an empty house at the East End of London ; and we are then taken back some time, led up to the deed, and have the sequel told. We must own that the title repelled us, and that the story is not exactly to our liking; still, it is only fair to say that the author has done her work well, and with good taste. There is clever contrivance in the plot, some skill in the drawing of character, and good literary work in the writing.
