" A Catholic clergyman, whose name I can give you if necessary, and who is my authority for the statement, was lately in Vienna, and had an interview of nearly two hours with Prince Metternich ; during which he was questioned by that Minister on the state of Ireland, and informed that the desire to elicit information on the state of that country was occasioned by a request made by the Cabinet of England to procure the Pope's influence to put down the agi- tation in Ireland.

" This negotiation having been unsuccessful, circumstances render it pro- bable that the disappointed parties tried their luck at Paris. The first procla- mation against the Irish was issued by Louis Philippe, and it was soon followed by another at home."
