The Moabite Stone. By W. H. Bennett D.D. (T. and
T. Clark. 2s. 6d. net.)—This is a description and explanation by an expert of the Moabite Stone. We have the story of its discovery, the reasons which have convinced scholars of its genuineness, a literal and a paraphrastic translation, and a reconstruction of the history of the period from the materials available. It is plain that the Bible narrative has to be treated with considerable freedom if we are to make it consistent with established facts. This may be disturbing to some minds ; on the other hand, what could be more in harmony with the general scheme of world history, as we conceive it, than the fact that Israel remains a power and Moab has utterly vanished?
