It is to the credit of a large number of
Dutch-speaking citizens that they signed appeals to the Government to withdraw the Bill. At last General Hertzog bowed to the storm and announced that the Bill would be post- poned for a year, though when it was reintroduced it would again provide for the omission of the Union Jack though the design for the new flag might be changed. General Smuts, who has placed the harmony of the Dutch and British races above every other political consideration, has come very well out of the controversy.
