Lancashire. Painted by Albert Woods. Described by F. A. Bruton.
(A. and C. Black, 20s. net.)--Mr. Woods's gaily- coloured pictures do not recall the Lancashire that we knew, though it may be that during the coal strike such vivid effects were momentarily possible. Dr. Bruton's. text is sober and scholarly and outlines clearly the geography and history of Lancashire. He devotes an attractive chapter to the fine Cistercian abbeys, Whalley and Furness, and he describes the grim Pennine as well as the better known Lake hills which bound North Lancashire. It is a good book, based on personal know- ledge and independent research.
