The "Filibuster War" in Nicaragua, by C. W. Doubleday (G.
P. Patnam's Sons), is a record, worth reading, of a curious episode in history, given by one who took part in it. The writer expresser' a high opinion of General Walker (though he disapproved of the second disastrous expedition, in which the adventurer met his death). We cheerfully subscribe to the praises of his courage and freedom from rapacity, but hold, at the same time, that his success woald have been a disaster to America. He aspired to found an "Empire of Central America," and of course it would have been a Slave Empire.
