Through Storm and Stress. By Mardale. (Walter Scott and Co.
6s.)—This is a most well-intentioned book, built on the old- fashioned lines ; there are the usual obstacles in the course of true love, the stern father, the repentant ill-doer, the unexpected recognition, and the happy winding-up of everything ; "a time," says our author, " will eventually dawn when sunshine will dispel the gloom." All this makes a somewhat monotonous story ; we cannot help feeling, too, that it might have taken far less time. Still, the book shows now and then signs of ability.
