The preliminary proceedings in the French Chamber of Depu- ties
confirm the impression that the Liberal party have gained ground, and the Doctrinaires became weaker. DUPIN was chosen President of the Chamber, on Tuesday, by the votes of nearly two-thirds of the members. The election of the four Vice-Presidents afforded a better test of the strength of parties. The two first were CALMON and GRIDAINE, innocuous persons of Liberal politics ; the third, PASSY, of the Centre Gaucho; the fourth, JACQUEMINOT, elected by the Doctrinaires and the Minis- terialists united. BENJAMIN DELESSERT, the Doctrinaire candi- date, who last year gained the second Vice-Presidency by a very large majority, had only 143 votes ; whilst °DILLON BARROT, who last year could not have mustered GO votes, received 142. The Journal dee Debate says, that the large number of votes given for BARROT demonstrates an alliance between the Gauche fled the Centre Gauche—the Radicals and Moderate Radicals ; and that consequently France is menaced with anarchy, demo- cracy, and every description of mischief.
