DI Stephen Marston: an apology
In an article published on 31 July 1999, we referred to Operation Whiting, an investigation into alleged child abuse in Lancashire. We also referred to the case of James Chaning-Pearce, a Jesuit priest who served a prison sentence after admitting indecent assault.
The officer in charge of Operation Whiting and the Chaning-Pearce investigation was DI Stephen Marston.
We wish to make it clear that we did not intend to suggest that DI Marston had personally drummed up complaints by persuading victims that they had been sexually abused when they had not; nor that he had himself offered compensation in return for testimony against suspected child abusers; nor that he implemented or condoned such practices by officers under his command.
We accept that DI Marston did not do any of the above, and if our article suggested otherwise, we withdraw any such suggestion unconditionally. We apologise to DI Marston for any offence caused.
