The serious riots which began in Belfast on Wednesday week
were repressed by Saturday. Large bodies of troops, with armoured care and maehine-guns, were employed to assist the police in keeping the rival factions apart, and were compelled to fire on the rioters. In the course of the disturbances eighteen persons were killed and two hundred wounded, and much damage was done to property. The troops continued to patrol the disturbed quarters, and the Roman Catholic) shipyard employees were afraid to resume their work.
