Windy words
Sir: The financial attractions of wind-farms are considerable so long as the UK con- sumer is providing the subsidy (And anoth- er thing, 17 July.) UK power generators are legally compelled to buy such electrical power for five years at between three and four times the market price. The result is that the initial investment is repaid within two and a half years.
The aesthetic issue is, of course, subjec- tive. Nonetheless I can assure Mr Johnson that many of us in Cornwall do not follow the Californian example. We regard the visual pollution created by existing wind- farms (which can be seen from tens of miles) as intolerable — all the more because they generate so little power.
