pm THE EDITOR or THE "SPECTATOR."] STE,—In the Spectator of July 27th, you published a letter by " R. H. Q." which cited a passage of Archbishop Whately, as bearing on the Home-rule Question. The following extract from a letter of Dr. Arnold is interesting as coming from one whose name is as great as Whately's, whose claim to be " an exponent of Liberalism " is as good. In a letter to Arch- bishop Whately (Stanley's Life, Vol. I., p. 323), Dr. Arnold says in passing :—" I always grounded the right to [Catholic] emancipation on the principle that Ireland was a distinct nation, entitled to govern itself."—I am, Sir, &c.,
