The taxation of motor vehicles was on Tuesday the subject
of very important evidence given before the Departmental Committee on the Taxation and Regulation of Road Vehicles. As in the evidence by Sir Arthur Stanley, there were very strong expressions of opinion by the experts in favour of a petrol tax as the main impost. Those who use the road should pay for that use in direct proportion to their use. But using the road, whether by pressing it hard through weight or through the great mileage covered, means a proportionate explosion of petrol.
