SIR,—It is a little hard for a translator whose work has been so highly praised as that of Mr Graham Snell to be blamed for a misprint. Your reviewer, who devoted a generous amount of space (January 27) to A Girl Called Jules by Milena Milani, was not of course to know, when he quoted a single sen- tence as evidence of a 'stilted translation,' that this particular sentence got mangled after the page proofs had been passed. It was even more unfor- tunate that the accident should have happened to the first sentence in the book. I think it is only fair to Mr Snell, whose translation of this novel bps been widely praised, to make this clear.
