At a stroke of the pen

Sir: With pen-pusher friends like Mr J. Vijayatunga (The Spectator, June 26), Mrs Indra Gandhi doesn't needed any enemies " visdoesn't needed an enemies " visd-vis " Pakistan. With one stroke remember that the diabolical device of creating an 'East Pakistan' across all that corridor . . . ." Mr Vijayatunga has proved the Pakistani case to be the hilt for the uncommitted. Pakistani allegations are that there are powerful elements in India who have not reconciled themselves to the State of Pakistan, and that these are not only now fishing in the troubled waters of East Pakistan but were in fact the main instigators of rebellion there.

As for the degree of severity displayed by the armed forces of Pakistan in quelling rebellion, opinion might well differ. However, as long as the comity of nations (as represented in the United Nations), regards East Pakistan as part of the State of Pakistan, people living in glass houses should not throw stones at others, no matter how indignantly they get worked up in righteous anger.
