LETTERS Rerouted jam
Sir: As one of Alistair McAlpine's jam- making brigade (The self-restraint of the Saudis' 26 June), I have to say that my con- stituency was never able to send its quota of funds to Central Office. It was all that we could do to keep our own local HQ in busi- ness. I think that many constituencies would say the same.
What we did do, however, both at branch and constituency level, was to publish our accounts in full, giving sources of income and also details of expenditure. These accounts were duly audited.
I find it quite astonishing that any public body, especially one that is governing the country, should be keeping its financial affairs secret.
I am afraid that my jam has another des- tination nowadays.
