MARKS AND SPENCER

Year after year with an almost monotonous regularity, Marks and Spencer, the chain store proprietors, continue to show increased profits and to extend their business. The programme of expansion for the current year, Mr. Simon Marks announced, at Wednesday's meeting, embraces II new stores including 3 replacements and 4o extensions. The company is now operating 228 stores, having opened 102 new stores and made important extensions in 109 others since 1933. There is no hint of trade recession in these figures ; indeed, Mr. Marks holds the view that " there is still in this country a vast untapped market which we can reach only by the creation of better merchandise values." He gave some indications of the merchandise policy by which the Board is striving to tap that market. The policy is co-operation with

the producer.
