; both the extreme Right and the extreme Left fared badly. We need not disguise from ourselves that under the name of Nationalism Dr. Jarres stands more or less confessedly for a restoration of-Monarchism. So far, however, from getting the absolute majority which is necessary for election at the first polls, he has not even got so great a majority as the Nationalist Party secured in the Reichstag elections three months ago. At the next polls a bare majority will be enough. It surely ought to be possible for the Republicans to agree upon a joint candidate in the interval. In order to make sure of returning a can- didate the Republicans must choose between Dr. Marx, Dr. Braun and Dr. Hellpach. It would be out of place for a British journal to take sides on an issue in a foreign country, but our fortunes are so intimately connected with the peace of Europe that we cannot be prohibited from earnestly desiring the election of a President who will act temperately. Dr. Marx is the candidate with the greatest experience and perhaps with the highest sense of responsibility. * *
