NEWS OF THE WEEK
THE results of the first polls held last Sunday in the German Presidential Election were much as expected. That is to say the Nationalist candidate, Dr. 'Janes, polled the highest number of votes because the Republican vote was dissipated among a number of can- -didates representing various shades of Republicanism. It is to be hoped that a sufficient number of those who support the Weimar Constitution and who desire a policy of European conciliation will get together in time to return a President of moderate hue at the second polls three weeks hence. The figures, according to Reuter, were as follows :- Dr. Jarres (Nationalist) .. .. .. 10,787,870
Dr. Braun (Socialist) .. .. .. 7,838,676 Dr. Marx (Centre) .. .. 3,988,559 Herr Thalmann (Communist) • • .. 1,885,770 Dr. Hellpach (Democrat) • • • • .. 1,582,414 Dr. Held (Bavarian) .. .. 999,036 General Ludendorff (Bavarian Fascists) .. 210,970
