The strike in the London printing trade which delayed the
publication of the Spectator by about twenty-four hours last week is happily ended. The trouble began with the bookbinders. The dispute concerned only five men who were working a new German machine. We shall not try to determine the rights and the wrongs.in the dispute. It is enough to say that by Tuesday night of last week thousands of men were idle and that if a settlement had not followed quickly the dispute might have spread to the whole London printing trade and perhaps over the whole country. It is not too much to ask that a little more cool- headedness should be displayed. We can safely appeal to both sides, for it is now the fashion with Labour leaders to vie with employers in pointing out the disastrous effects of strikes. We hope that in the London printing trade, at all events, both sides will scrupulously adhere to their welcome announcement that they mean to make better use in future of the Joint Industrial Council.
