Fishy etymology
Sir: Mr J. G. Dudley (Letters, 31 January) complains that Auberon Waugh has used a word with which he, J. G. Dudley, is unfamiliar. The word, `pilgering', comes from the word 'Page'. Pilge is the name of a lake high in the Rocky Mountains . . . Lake Pilge. The lake, so deep the bottom has never been found, was named for the fish which lived in abundance in the lake — and nowhere else, serious fishermen will tell you.
