Gavin's Wrong Rail

Sir: Gavin Stamp is, uncharacteristically, wrong (Not motoring, 28 March). GWR does not stand for the sad little relic of Brunel and Gooch's great enterprise but for Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. As Mr Gricer will confirm, the line runs from its base near Broadway most of the way to Cheltenham racecourse station, which has the promise of pretty good race- day specials when they've got some more track down. With luck, it may once again link Cheltenham and Stratford. Private enthusiasm and effort have got it this far despite an inept BR closure and deliberate vandalism of decent country stations, and it has managed without a penny of subsidy, which is rather more than the main line can claim.

If Mr Stamp, whose writing I greatly enjoy, would care to join me on the succes- sor to what used to be called God's Won- derful Railway, I'll make sure that old GWR traditions are upheld with a decent bottle of Spectator Wine Club claret.
