Mr. Whalley, useful for once, on Tuesday asked Sir Stafford
Northcote whether the Treasury would ask for any vote to defray the expense of the increase in the Mediterranean garrisons ; and whether he would, before the close of the Session, make any ex- planation as to the intentions of the Government in regard to the war in the East. Sir S. Northcote replied that it would not be necessary to ask for any special vote for the Mediterranean garrisons, and probably not for any other purpose. He did not think it would be necessary to give any further information as to the policy to be pursued. This amounts to a renewed state- ment that the policy of Great Britain in this war is one of strict neutrality.
