Sir: There have indeed been design changes. What on earth

is the purpose of all those vertical lines between columns? Is it scaffolding, are your contributors being caged, or is there some new Euro- regulation we should know about? The last time I saw so many boxes was in the Beano.

You are, Sir, a literary man, not an artist, and so cannot be blamed for failing to understand that the mark of good design is simple, classical elegance: a style most fitted for the Spectator. Let your writers speak for themselves and away with these fussy mannerisms.
