The Lord Chancellor told the House of Lords last week
that he should favour an amendment of the law so as to remove the difficulties occasioned by the decision, in the case of Sutters e'. Briggs, that cheques paid in settlement of betting losses were worthless. He could not promise that the Cabinet would go back on their undertaking not to introduce any general legis- lation in this short autumn session. On Wednesday, Lord Muir Mackenzie introduced a Bill to modify the Act of 1835, so that a debt legally payable in money may be paid by cheque. The Lord Chancellor supported it and the Bill was read a second time. Whether the Bill will pass through the House of Commons by general agreement is more than doubtful.
