Whither Rome?
Sir: How sad and succinct is Brocard Sewell's description (book review, 22 October) of the present state of Roman Catholicism. It is, as he suggests, now more confused than Anglicanism was when I became a Roman Catholic in 1955. My problem then was, how could one bring children up in the Church of England if one Church was 'Broad', another 'Evangelical', another 'Anglo-Catholic' Being an Anglo-Catholic, I finally plumped for Rome.
And now what has happened to Rome? How does one inform an inquirer, or one's children, what we believe?
The book We Believe by a Catholic Priest, reviewed by Brocard Sewell, pro- vides a wonderfully integrated, cohesive and satisfying statement of the full Catholic Faith — for anyone in search of it — but where do you send them to practise it?
