Folly in Cyprus
M HE statement by the Greek Cypriot Minister I of Labour, Mr. Papadopoulos, that the Zurich agreements could not be regarded as a permanent obstacle to the full realisation of Greek-Cypriot national aspirations is both irre- sponsible and exceptionally ill-timed. It comes after bomb outrages in Turkish mosques in Cyprus and in the middle of tension between the Greek and Turkish communities arising out of the interpretation of the constitution. For Greek Cypriots to raise once again the question of enosis and thus undermine the Zurich settle- ment is an act of great folly by which they them- selves will be the losers. In any conflict between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus it would not be. Greece which would emerge the winner. Fortu- nately, relations have not .yet deteriorated to that point, nor will they do so if the governments of Greece and Turkey hold to their obligations. But Archbishop Makarios should chasten the, rhetorical extravagances of his ministers.
