and Co.)—An attempt to popularize the study of counterpoint by giving not merely the rules, but the principles on which they rest. At the same time the subject is treated with great conciseness. Mr. Hullah has written a grammar, not a history. The name of the writer is a
enfficiont guarantee for the value of this work ; but we almost doubt whether he would not have done better to follow his own feeling, and make it altogether suited for persons who have not gone through a pre- vious course of harmony.
