life,—the unchangeableness of the human heart—very strongly as against the progress-of-mankind and advance-of-science theories. "Some people," says the author, with considerable wit,." think the Lord of Heaven and Earth must have special respect for civil engineers, exactly as the old Marquis thought he would deal easily with persons of quality." There is, however, no real conflict between religion and, a belief in human pro- gress, though perhaps the side of truth which Mr. Tyrwhitt states is just at present least attended to. The book has more matter in it than most sermons.
