SIB,—It is rather surprising that none of your correspondents seems to have called attention to the value of Veterans in the training of young soldiers in the differences between sham- fighting and warfare. Surely in case of invasion the majority of our Veterans should be carefully scattered throughout the peace-trained companies, to " show them bow the game is really played." How much of the success of the Spectator Experimental Company was due to the fact that the recruits were judiciously brought into personal contact with men who had been frequently under fire.
