In Wednesday's papers a letter appeared from the Prime Minister
to the Lord Mayor of London on the subject of memorials to King Edward. Mr. Asquith announces the opinion of the Government that " the object in view would best be secured by local rather than national memorials." He thinks that this is especially true considering King Edward's keen desire "to become acquainted by his personal presence with all classes of his subjects in every part of the United Kingdom." Accordingly the Lord Mayor has decided to form a Committee for considering schemes for a London memorial, and a Mansion House Fund has been opened for the purpose of collecting subscriptions.
