Taki on Athens
Sir: May we request an inch or two of column space to correct some impressions made in an article in your issue dated 8 November? Under the peculiarly in- appropriate heading of `High life', your correspondent Taki (by name and, it seems, nature) produced one of the most offensive and irrelevant pieces of drivel it has been our misfortune to read.
The opening two paragraphs were, in their breathtaking self-indulgence and name-dropping, a warning of sorts for what was to follow. The aimless wanderings of a mind (sic) sick with egocentricity drifted on to the appalling finale — a lament for the prostitutes of yesteryear! Is it possible that their unavailability may, in this case, have less to do with Aids than with their becoming generally more selective?
Athens, contrary to the impression cre- ated by this unfortunate man, is a thriving, interesting city, assuming that one is pre- pared to spend money on other pastimes than the pursuit of sexual gratification. Should you wish to receive for publication an article worth reading, we would be only too happy to oblige — for a fee.
