We have lost three seats in the City, and though

Mr. Goschen's seat is saved, he is fifteen hundred behind the lowest of the Con- servatives. The City has for a long time been the stronghold of Liberalism, and it put Mr. Goschen at the head of the poll in 1868. To the fourth seat at a general election, when the minority principle comes into force, we could never lay any claim, but the loss of two out of three seats is a heavy blow. The wealth of the City clearly refuses its confidence to the finance of Mr. Gladstone;
