FINANCIAL NOTES

UNCERTAIN MARKETS.

Caution and uncertainty constitute the outstanding char- acteristics of the Stock Exchange at the moment. On the one hand intrinsic conditions in most markets are sounder than at the beginning of the year, because there has been a considerable shake-out of weak speculative positions. On the other hand apprehensions about Labour, and uncer- tainties with regard to the effect likely to be produced upon the Money Market should the country return to a Gold Stand- ard are occasioning considerable doubts as to what may be termel general market tendencies.
