Black shorts brigade
Sir: P. G. Wodehouse would not have contemplated going to tea with Hitler in 1939 (Competition, 30 June). According to Frances Donaldson's official biography he wrote, in 1939, 'Someone ought to get up in Parliament and call Hitler a swine'. In The Code of the Woosters, published in 1938, he parodied Sir Oswald Mosley's Fascist black shirt brigade as `. . . black shorts. . . How perfectly foul.'
I wish you had not arranged this com- petition. He suffered enough in his life- time.
