SOAP FOR THE LIMBLESS Sm,—In the Spectator's Notebook by Janus,
he mentions the "odd" fact of limbless persons being granted an extra soap-ration. It is less than a year since this concession was " wrung " from the Ministry of Food by the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association. It was after the ordinary ration was axed. The reason for it isn't so odd to any person who wears artificial limbs. It is simply that a white woollen sock is worn over the amputated stump (sometimes more than one) and this should be clean every day, particularly during the warm weather. Obviously this involves a great deal of extra washing, and can't be done on the ordinary ration, and the sock has to be washed at home. Perhaps this explanation will satisfy Janus, and he will appreciate the snags one is up against with an artificial limb.— Yours faithfully,
