York.)—Mr. Hubert Hare Bancroft, who must not be con- founded with his namesake, George Bancroft, describes in this volume how he came to write his book on "The History of the Pacific States," and "Native Races of the Pacific States," giving at the same time a number of biographical particulars. There has been something encyclopedic in his work, so vast were the materials which he collected, and from which he elaborated his results. A more remarkable story of energy it would not be easy to find.
