The banking statistics of Ireland, published on Tuesday, deserve attention.

The deposits in the Savings Banks, which in 1886 were £29,223,000, are now £34,563,000, an increase of £5,340,000. This, when taken in connection with the decrease of population, is very significant of the increased prosperity of the people of Ireland. There are fewer of them than there were, but those that remain are rapidly emerging from their old position of a nation of paupers. The Bank statistics and the Census figures, which show that the mud-cabin is almost extinct in Ireland, are of the happiest omen.
