• On Wednesday the King, accompanied by the Queen, pre-

sented medals to three thousand officers and men who have returned from South Africa,—Lord Roberts being the first to receive the medal, and Lord Milner being one of the recipients. The ceremony was admirably organised—his Majesty has a positive genius for the conduct and management of dignified State functions—and the country was greatly im- pressed by the spectacle of the men who had dared and done so .much for their country receiving at the bands of the Sovereign the recognition due to their services.
