Sir Douglas Haig is the last man in the world

to boast. We may be perfectly sure that he did not say a word more than he felt the situation entitled him to say. There is a kind of courage which does not shrink, however, from giving hostages to the future by prophecy, and personally we like and admire that kind of courage when it is well founded. If it is exhibited by a Commander-in- Chief, it stirs the spirits of his men to enthusiasm and redoubles the depression of the enemy :-

" In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility ; But when. the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger :

Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood."
