The Duke of Norfolk, whose death at the age of

sixty-nine we record with much regret, was the premier Duke and premier Earl of England, and- the unquestioned leader of the English Roman Catholics, in whose affairs he took a lively interest throughout his life. It is said that mainly through his influence J. H. Newman was made a Cardinal. The Duke once took office as Postmaster- General under Lord Salisbury, and he served for three years as Mayor, and Lord Mayor, of Sheffield ; but ho preferred to do his public work in his own way. People liked the Duke not least for the contrast between the feudal state which he maintained as the heir of the Howards at Arundel and the extreme simplicity which he affected in his personal habits. He will long bo remembered as one of the most kindly, honourable, and public-spirited Englishmen of our times.
