In spite of the earnest recommendation of the Royal tontinission

on Cross-River Traffic that its Report should be put into effect as a whole, the Government have decided to take it in sections. This is disappointing. It is true that the Cost of carrying out the whole scheme would be very formidable, but it cannot be regarded as rohibitive. It could be spread over many years, and ince. accelerated traffic would help indirectly to .pay he bill, it is clear that the sooner the improvements re made the better. The Government, as the Prime linister announced in the House of Commons on Wed- esday, are prepared to pay 75 per cent. towards Waterloo ridge, provided that the. present bridge is reconstructed nd widened but not demolished. They also offer 50 per rut. of the cost of new approaches to the proposed udgate Bridge, and 75 per cent. towards the urgent ietoria Dock road scheme. * * * *
