Unfair to my school

From Maura Keady

Sir: The staff here at John Burns Primary were deeply offended by Jane Kelly’s article (‘Out of tune’, 25 February). To comment that the children are of ‘mainly ... Caribbean origin’ at our school and to then highlight ‘special needs’ as she did suggests to the reader that there is a strong correlation here when, in fact, there is not. John Burns School is very proud of its multicultural population and the work we do challenging negative stereotypes. We believe that we are successful in this approach and that Jane Kelly’s jibes were indicative of someone who believes in the superiority of one particular race over another.

We would like to remind Jane Kelly that this school is 10th in the league tables of academic success in Wandsworth. We have consistently been in the top 5 per cent of schools nationally and are a highly successful, oversubscribed and inclusive school.
