* The deficiency in 1855 as compared with 1854 is more nominal than real. The accounts for 1854 were made up to the 5th January 1855, being five days more than enter into the year ending 31st liecember last. To supply the means of comparison, an allowance of 1,695,2751. falls to be added. for those five days; making 97,364,655/. as the declared value of the exports for 1855.

EXPORTS OF FOREIGN AND COLONIAL MERCHANDISE.

For the most part a decrease is exhibited in 1855 as compared with 1854 in the quantities exported. Coffee has fallen off from 32,500,000 pounds to 29,000,000. Cotton (raw) continues at 1,100,000 hundredweight. An in- crease 18 shown under the heads of oil, hides, quicksilver, and raw silk.

CUSTOMS-DUTIES.

1853. 1834. 1835.

Net receipts £22,438,069 .. £22,166,966 .. 22,335,063

As compared with 1854, the only imports upon which increased revenue was derived in 1855 are coffee, rum, sugar, tea, and tobacco. A decrease appears under almost every other head.

EXCISE.

In the quantities of articles chargeable with excise-duties for the same two years, hops show a large increase for 1855: in England, the quantity increased from 10,000,000 pounds to 83„000,000. There is a small decrease under every other head-malt, paper, spirits, sugar.

GRAIN AND MEAL IMPORTED.

In 1855, 5,729,241 quarters of grain, and 1,922,318 hundredweight of meal were imported from foreign countries and our own colonies. With the exception of 282 hundredweight of meal, the imports from Russia are blank.

EXPORTS AND IMPORTS FOR JANUARY 1856.

In the month of January, the Exports show an increase of 1,509,9901. over those of January 185o, partly owing to the prospects of peace in the last two weeks of the period. The totals were-for January 1855, 6,464,7961.; for January 1856, 7,974,786/. There was a large increase in cotton yarn, haberdashery, linen manufactures, metals, silk manufactures, woollen manufactures and woollen yarn, and in " unenumerated articles " ; there was no important decrease of any article exported.

In the Imports, most articles of provisions, tea, wines, &c., exhibit a falling-of; but the imports of sugar increased, and there was a great excess in tobacco. Of raw material, the imports of flax, hemp, silk, and tallow, were less tban in the month of 1855; but in cotton and wool there was an increase.
